Alice Eaton diary, 1865-1908.

Dairy consisting of 10 entries written sporadically from 1865 to 1908. In three entries written during November of 1865 the author wrote of family matters and her impending move to Memphis where her husband planned to start a newspaper (the Unionist paper The Memphis Post). She also mentioned that her husband was brevetted Brigadier General by Ulysses S. Grant. By June of 1866 the family had moved to Memphis. In 2 entries during 1866, she wrote of the difficulty of her husband's work and the aging effect it had on him. She mentioned the radical nature of the Post and the importance of new ideas to the postwar South as well as her worries about her husband's safety due to the paper's unpopular views. She also wrote that cholera was abating in the city. In 1869 the author wrote from Nashville describing her home and her children. Again she also wrote about the struggles of the Post and includes comments about Southern animosity toward Northerners and about the corrupt "radicals." She then included a recipe for a pie crust. By 1870, the Eatons had moved back to Washington, D.C. In 1872, Mrs. Eaton wrote that her husband had been appointed Commissioner of Education. Three entries written from July thorugh September of that year describe a visit to Sutton, N.H. and include news of family and friends. In one entry written in June of 1908 the author reflected briefly on her life and family. Plants and flowers are pressed between some pages.
